Pirate Party Snacks

Boy in Pirate Costume Keep your little swashbucklers fed with some pirate inspired snacks. Snack time is a good way to fill some party time as a break between activities.

Pirate Grub and Grog Ideas:

1. Bleeding Grog
2. Sword Snack
3. Treasure Box Treats
4. Goldfish
5. Beef Jerky

1. Bleeding Grog

In this drink (grog) the ice cubes "bleed" as they melt into a clear drink, creating a tasty punch. Kids will love the bleeding effect.

What you'll need:

  • Ice cube tray
  • Red concentrated fruit punch
  • 7UP, Sprite, or other clear bubbly drink
  • Clear mugs (or other clear glass or plastic cup)

What to do:

  • Freeze the concentrated fruit punch in the ice cube tray
  • Pour some of the clear drink into mugs (or other clear drinking cups) for each child
  • Distribute the drinks to each child and drop a red punch ice cube into each mug
  • Watch the ice cubes bleed into the drink, while adding flavor.

2. Sword Snack

The little swashbucklers always love swords, so why not create some carrot and cucumber swords for a healthy and fun pirate snack.

What you'll need:

  • Carrots (long thin ones, not baby carrots)
  • Cucumber (fairly fat one)
  • Your favorite dip

What to do:

  • Slice the carrots into quarters lengthwise.
  • Slice the cucumbers into round slices.
  • Slide the cucumber slices down each carrot stick from the pointy end down towards the fatter end.
  • Leave a little space at the end for the handle
The kids should have fun dueling as they snack. This is one time when playing with their food is part of the plan.

3. Treasure Box Treats

Pirates are always after the treasure loot so why not feed them a little loot during the party. They'll definitely dig into this loot!

What you'll need:

What to do:

  • Make your own treasure chest or buy a treaure chest large enough for the loot.
  • Choose your selection of chocolate coins, candy necklaces, ring pops, or other candy bling.
  • Except for the chocolate coins, remove the candy from their wrappings so that the pirate loot looks more real. You can also add some plastice jewelry to the box to add to the effect.
  • Arrange the candy in the treasure box to look like a real pirate treasure.
The pirate party guests will act like real pirates as they try to get to the treasure first to get as much candy loot as possible. You'll probably need to limit them to a certain number of each treat!

4. Goldfish

There's nothing special with this other than fish matching the seafaring theme of a pirate birthday party. Usually even the fussiest of eaters like goldfish, so it's a nice pirate snack that most kids will enjoy.

5. Beef Jerky

Pirates would be at sea for weeks at a time, so preserved meats like beef jerky were a mainstay of a pirate's diet at sea. This is more of an authentic pirate snack, but it may not be appealing to a lot of kids, especially for younger ones. But it might be a good treat for other kids looking to try some authentic pirate grub.
